  • The tournament director shall assign a scorer for each group in the tournament. The scorer should come from the coaches of the schools represented in the tournament or other adults, and no one should be assigned to a group where there is a member of their school participating.  The director of the tournament should assign the scorers to each group and should meet prior to the beginning of the tournament to go over the responsibilities of the scorers. Some of the duties of the scorers are as follows:
    1. Their presence should help to speed up play and create the type atmosphere in which we want high school golf played.
    2. They should keep count of the number of strokes for each player on each hole as a back-up for the players – each player is responsible for keeping another player’s card. Scores must be kept in compliance with USGA rules. The scorers, however, can assist in the scoring by keeping a card with all four players as the back-up. Then the scorer should go over each player’s score at the next tee prior to teeing off on the next hole. The scorer can then have each player call out their score. Any questions regarding a particular player’s score can then be resolved by the scorer at that time.
    3. The scorer should be instructed that they are not serving as rules officials. Any violations must be called by other players in the group. There is no change in this responsibility from what has been in the past.
    4. There are other responsibilities that can be gone over with the scorers in your particular region. These are just examples.
